A little good news would be nice. We have been hearing the bad news. Even if we don’t watch the news, pretty much everywhere we turn we hear something bad is happening. In times like this, faith or trust is required to have peace and happiness. Faith or Trust in something–some leader, some turn of events, ourselves, God — something. So what does it mean to have faith in something versus trusting in something? One thing is for sure–trusting is the harder thing to do.
I heard this story from my mentor, Robert Kiyosaki, describing the difference between faith and trust.
FAITH VS TRUST – The Man On The Bicycle
There was a man who would tie a rope on a very tall building – going across to another very tall building. He would draw crowds because he would get on his bike and ride across the rope to the other building way up high. The crowds would cheer him on and say things like, “We know you can do it!” When he would get across they would say, “Yay! We knew you could do it!” The man turned to the crowd and asked if anyone would like to go across with him. Nobody volunteered. They believed (or had faith) in him. They didn’t trust him when it involved them. There was a small boy who came out of the crowd who said, “I’ll go with you.” The crowd was angry. They didn’t like the idea of the boy being involved. The man crossed with the boy and came back. The crowd cheered. They asked the boy how he had the courage to cross with the man. The boy replied, “He’s my father!”
I love that story.
None of us know what’s to come. What we do know is that every single day is a gift. We are not guaranteed another day. That is why it is so important to learn to trust in something greater than ourselves. We can certainly trust in our Father — trust in God. There’s a quote I like by James Dean who said, “Dream as if you’ll live forever and LIVE as if you’ll die tomorrow.” Once we give all that bad news over to Him, we can trust that whatever comes our way, we can handle it. We can “grab life by the horns,” dream, take action, and actually live life.
What will you decide to do with this precious gift of a day? Will you spend it making improvements in your own life? Will you spend it helping others? Will you spend it admiring the beauty of this world? What will you choose? After all, we’ve been given this absolutely amazing gift…another day of life!
