Finding Joy in Aging: The Power of Doing What You Love

I talked to my Dad on the phone a few weeks ago. I told him I was finally feeling my age. Before, I’d been feeling like I was in my late twenties, early thirties. I asked him if he had experienced a similar event in his fifties. I thought maybe my body had gone through some type of shift. I could tell that he didn’t really recall such an event happening to himself. He did want to acknowledge how I was feeling and said that we do go through changes as we age. I accepted that answer, and just embraced feeling. . . let’s just say. . .older.

Over the next few weeks, something inside me shifted again. I noticed that I was feeling good, jamming out to some 90’s pop music while I was cleaning my house. I began reminiscing on times I cleaned my house in the late nineties when I lived in Marion, Arkansas. I felt young again in that moment. Over the next few days, I found myself working outside in my backyard. We bought some flowers to go around our Koi fishpond. I enjoyed being in nature, placing each one of them mindfully into the ground. I’ll spare you the details, but we did other landscaping and gardening projects in the backyard as well. We got the summer kiddie pool ready for our grandchildren and cleaned up their little play area. We got the grill ready, and bought groceries for a family cookout. Then, we had a wonderful family cookout.

After doing these things, I noticed something. I didn’t feel old. I was back to feeling younger again. I recalled something Bob Proctor shared in one of his lectures. He said, “Do something you love. It doesn’t matter what it is. It could be sitting on the couch petting your cat.” I’m paraphrasing what he said, because I don’t remember the exact quote, but the message was received. I realized I felt good again, because I was doing what I loved. I was listening to music that made me feel good inside. I was spending time cleaning our home. I was spending time in nature. I was spending time with loved ones. Our bodies do go through changes as we age, but Bob Proctor hit the nail on the head. There is absolute power in doing what we love — even the simple things.

~Many blessings to you and yours.
